- Description
- Phantom Limb consists of lyric poems which are concerned with the theme of water and with the way in which the past influences the present. According to Geoff Page, the work ‘studiously avoids standard poetic fare, preferring to zero in on those few things other poets haven’t quite got around to yet’ (2010) while Martin Duwell states that ‘the fact that it never foregrounds [its twin obsessions of water and the shadow the past casts] in any way that appears poetically predictable means that within the consistency is a lot of variety. As a result, it is a really impressive book coming to the truth of things – like Montaigne on his horse – on its own, distinctive pathways.’ This achievement of newness and avoidance of predictability is a significant demonstration of the relevance of the lyric in contemporary poetry.
